OBITUARY:

THE LATE MAGISTRATE FAUSTIN GABRIEL MBODOU HONORED BY THE REPUBLIC

Having passed away on October 11, the Central African nation paid its final respects today, October 28, to the late magistrate—the first honorary president of the Court of Cassation—during a ceremony held on the steps of the Bangui Court of Appeals.

Prime Minister and Head of Government Félix MOLOUA, along with several members of the government, members of the judiciary, relatives, friends, and acquaintances, paid a well-deserved tribute to this great magistrate—described by Attorney Nicolas TIANGAYE as “integrity-driven, honest, and professional”—who marked “a glorious chapter in the history of the Central African judiciary.” Mr. Tiangayé was full of praise for this prosecutor, who, for nearly six months, presided over the first trial of a former African president from start to finish, ultimately securing his conviction “to the death penalty.”

This trial took place in Africa at a time when, in Europe, Romanian President Nicolae CEAUSESCU was being stoned to death following his conviction by his country’s courts. “Barbarism in Europe,” as former Bar Association President TIANGAYE recalls.

Through his professionalism and integrity, Judge Gabriel Faustin MBODOU inspired several generations of Central Africans to pursue careers in the judiciary.

The Head of Government laid a wreath on the remains of this “baobab” of the Central African justice system, who is now returning to rest in the land of his ancestors.
